MEET FRANCIS KOROMA

Academic & Policy Background

Francis Koroma is currently pursuing a degree in Political Science-Statistics at Columbia University, where his studies focus on international relations, diplomacy, and policy innovation. His academic work reflects a deep commitment to understanding how governments, institutions, and grassroots movements can collaborate to achieve sustainable development.

Before Columbia, Francis earned his Associate Degree in Business Management from the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC), graduating with distinction. He also studied Computer Science and Data Systems, which gave him a strong technical foundation and analytical mindset.

This mix of policy, business, and technology shapes his cross-disciplinary approach to solving global problems — particularly those that intersect with education, youth empowerment, and sustainability. His long-term goal is to leverage political science and leadership training to influence policy frameworks that support inclusive growth and innovation in Africa and beyond.

Leadership & Nonprofit Work

As Founder and President of the Francis Koroma Foundation (FKF)  a registered U.S. 501(c)(3) nonprofit — Francis leads a mission to empower youth through education, mentorship, and global leadership development. The foundation operates on the belief that young people are not just future leaders, but active changemakers today.

Under his leadership, the foundation has:

  • Reached over 3,500 youth across four continents, including Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America.
  • Awarded full scholarships and educational resources to high-achieving students from underrepresented backgrounds.
  • Facilitated internship placements and leadership programs that help young professionals build career experience.
  • Mentored students who have gone on to prestigious programs such as Yale Young Global Scholars, Berea College (USA), and Asia Pacific University (Japan).

FKF’s programs now include international youth diplomacy, entrepreneurship training, community development, and a global speaker series connecting young leaders with world figures. With 300+ volunteers across eight countries, the foundation has built a truly international network of youth-driven change.

Professional Recognition & Appointments

Francis’s leadership has earned him multiple honors that highlight both his local and global influence.

  • In 2022, he received the African Pacesetter for Development Award at the United Nations for his contributions to youth empowerment and community leadership.
  • In 2023, he was named one of the 25 Under 25 Global Legacy Award recipients by Common Purpose UK, recognizing emerging leaders shaping the future of global leadership.
  • He currently serves as Youth Ambassador to the United Nations for the Permanent Mission of Sierra Leone, representing youth voices in high-level discussions on policy and international cooperation.
  • Recently appointed Secretary General of the Organization of African Youth, Francis now coordinates continental initiatives advancing youth participation, economic inclusion, and governance.

These honors reflect not just his individual success but his consistent dedication to creating opportunities for others.

Speaking & Global Advocacy

Francis is a recognized international speaker who has addressed major global forums, including the UN ECOSOC Youth Forum, High-Level Political Forum, and United Nations General Assembly.

His speaking topics focus on:

  • Youth leadership and inclusion in policymaking
  • The role of innovation in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
  • Education and opportunity equity
  • Global cooperation and African development

Francis uses his platform to advocate for a generation of leaders who think globally but act locally. His talks blend storytelling, data, and actionable insights — making complex issues relatable and inspiring audiences to participate in change.

Innovation & Entrepreneurship

Beyond nonprofit leadership, Francis is an innovator at heart. He founded FranTech3D, a social enterprise born from a research collaboration at Yale University, aimed at addressing SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation.

FranTech3D designs affordable, large-capacity water tanks using 3D printing technology to help communities facing water scarcity. The project combines engineering, sustainability, and community partnerships to make water infrastructure more accessible and cost-effective.

His work through FranTech3D was recognized at the New Business Model Challenge (2020) hosted by the New Jersey Institute of Technology, where the project stood out for its potential to make a scalable social impact.

Francis continues to develop this initiative, exploring partnerships with universities, NGOs, and foundations to pilot affordable housing and clean water solutions in underserved areas.

Technology & Professional Experience

Francis’s background in technology adds a unique dimension to his leadership profile. He has worked as a SQL Server Database Administrator and served as a volunteer instructor for Microsoft Azure AI Fundamentals and SQL Server.

He holds a Microsoft AI Certification and continues to advocate for the integration of digital literacy into youth development programs. His technical background helps him approach leadership with a data-driven, systems-oriented perspective.

By combining his knowledge of data systems, artificial intelligence, and business analytics, Francis develops efficient, measurable, and tech-forward solutions for community and social programs — merging innovation with impact.

Creative & Cultural Engagement

Outside of technology and policy, Francis is also active in the creative and fashion industries. He walked at New York Fashion Week in 2023 and collaborates with global creative communities.

He is an active member of:

  • ForbesBLK, a network of Black leaders and professionals
  • The Recording Academy, which supports excellence in music and entertainment
  • Vogue’s Global Fashion Community, connecting fashion and culture advocates worldwide

Through these platforms, Francis mentors young artists and creative professionals, helping them build careers with purpose and resilience. He believes creativity is a universal language  one that connects people, tells stories, and inspires global progress.
